Twilight in Wanaka, New Zealand

Twilight in Wanaka, New Zealand

I was going to post something else today but it needs more work and I am too sick to think clearly.

Meanwhile, here is a picture of Wanaka in twilight hours. I love foggy weather – it has that mysterious quality and ethereal vibe about it.

This was taken during winter time. It had been raining all day with dark clouds, not a blue sky to be seen. About 4 pm, we decided to hike to Eely Point in the rain. The drain was overflowing and there was a mini waterfall when we turned back to our motel. Around 4.30 pm, it was already so dark. Mist covered the landscape and lights shined in the distance.

Shooting night scenery is very tricky. Without a tripod, camera shake is inevitable and using flash is not always a good idea. ISO setting above 200 tends to give grainy result. To minimise camera shake, I tried to keep the elbows firmly by my sides and the camera ends up with a centre grip. Waiting a few moments to compose the picture is more rewarding than just snapping away before the light is out.

Tip: Eely Point is on the right side of Lake Wanaka.

Tip : Sunset is on the right side of the lake and sunrise on the left.

Tip : The ducks are here year round. If you bring bread, they will come flying from the sky. Get someone else to feed the ducks if you wish to photograph that scene.

There are a number of excellent hikes around Wanaka area. Shuttle service runs regularly from Wanaka to Queenstown and vise versa. Wanaka is much more laid back than Queenstown. My favourite place to stay.

Till next time, have a great weekend!
