There is more to Lake Tekapo than just the beautiful lake. Take the time to hike the lakeside trail all the way up to Mount John. Enjoy the scenic landscape as you climb higher and higher.
Tussock hills and breathtaking blue water shining in the bright sunshine.
There is another way up to Mount John however I find the lakeside view much more scenic.
It is not particularly steep but if you are not used to the attitude, it does take your breath away. Take your time, there is no hurry.
I would recommend using hiking sticks to take pressure from your knees. Take due precautions. Bring water and energy food just in case.
From Lake Tekapo car park, turn left, pass the YHA and follow the lakeside trail. There was frost when I was hiking. The ground and plants were covered in icicles.
The trail passes private property, so climb over the fence as shown here.
There are animal trails here. I passed by a dead rabbit and startled two live ones on the trail. Click on the pictures for a larger view. Overhead, the eagles soared.
I mentioned in the last post to spare at least 2 hours if hiking to Mount John. Not quite.
The direct route takes between 2 and half hours to 3 hours. The lakeside trail takes between 3 hours to 3 and a half hours. Spend your time wisely.

I attempted this climb on swollen knees due to a previous hiking incident a few days before. I would not advice anyone hiking this with any injury!
